Hardy Succulents

Hardy succulents are one of the best ways to add architectural focus and drama to your garden, without having to worry about summer heatwaves and droughts.

Most benefit from some rain protection over winter. If they’re in a container, bring it up close to the house, or pop them in an unheated greenhouse, polytunnel or cold frame.

Left in the ground, they appreciate excellent drainage (sandy soil, lots of grit or gravel) and some kind of rain shelter in winter. A makeshift cloche is a popular option – just a piece of perspex held over the plant on simple wooden legs. This allows air to still conculate but keeps off the most extreme of the wet weather.

Cared for in this manner, many of these succulents can obtain impressive proportions over time, making for a truly eye-catching display.
