Welcome to Hidden Hortus.
My name is Richard and I’m a self-confessed plant addict.
Ever since childhood I’ve enjoyed the weird, the unusual and the bizarre. I guess it’s perfectly natural, therefore, that when I got into gardening I also developed a taste for the unusual – big spiky succulents, towering banana plants and more.
And because I’m forever planting more seeds or taking more cuttings than I should, Hidden Hortus was launched as my online hub for available stock.
Everything is grown here in Lincolnshire – no plants get bought in from wholesalers – and made available either here on our website or from one of the plant sales we attend each year.
(In case you were wondering, Hortus means garden. So the name refers to a secret or hidden garden – exactly the sort of feel I appreciate in a garden.)
My focus isn’t just odd the odd, the unusual and the arhcitectural – the sort of thing you won’t get in your local garden centre. Wherever possible it’s also on as many hardy plants as possible to achieve this effect with minimal effort.
I’ll admit there are a handful of plants I provide here that must be brought indoors over winter (Abutilons being a good example) but the vast majority will make it through a British winter with a moducum of care. In that way, yoou can enjoy an exotic garden all summer long, without the dread of wondering how on earth you’re going to store them all when the frosts start nearing.
Plants are living things, and we take their condition seriously. We prepare orders with care and dispatch during suitable seasonal conditions to help them arrive ready to settle in.
Because every plant is individual, the one you receive may vary naturally from website photographs in shape, size, colour or stage of growth. We think that is part of the pleasure of growing something living.
