Agave stricta ‘Rubra’ creates rounded rosettes of very narrow, rigid leaves. Warm red and bronze colouring can develop with stronger light and seasonal conditions, adding variety to a succulent collection. Its fine texture makes a lovely contrast with broad-leaved agaves and rounded cacti. Mature plants may send up tall stems with reddish flowers, though the sculptural foliage is the main attraction.
Growing conditions:
Grow in full sun in gritty, sharply drained compost, gradually acclimatising plants to stronger light. Keep almost dry and frost-free in winter, and position away from busy paths because the leaf tips are sharp.
Maximum size:
Rosettes reach around 50–60 cm tall and across, with offsets eventually forming a wider clump; flower stems can reach approximately 150 cm.
