Agave americana brings strong lines and bold colour to sunny patios and gravel planting. Its fleshy, arching leaves form a substantial rosette with toothed edges and sharp terminal spines. The shape looks particularly striking against gravel, pale walls or softer ornamental grasses. Very old plants can send up a towering flower spike, but the everyday attraction is that unmistakable silhouette.
Growing conditions:
Grow in full sun in sharply drained soil or gritty cactus compost, protecting plants from prolonged winter wet and severe frost. A large container that can be moved under frost-free cover is the safest choice in colder gardens.
Maximum size:
The rosette typically reaches 100–150 cm tall and wide; a rare flower spike can reach around 800 cm, and offsets broaden the colony.
