Yucca rigida forms a striking head of rigid, sword-shaped leaves with a blue to silvery-green tone. It develops a trunk slowly, giving older plants the presence of a small architectural tree. Established specimens may produce showy clusters of white flowers above the crown. The strong leaf shape works particularly well against plain walls or among lower, softer planting.
Growing conditions:
Grow in full sun in sharply drained soil with shelter from excessive winter rain. Protect young or newly planted specimens in severe weather and position well away from paths because the leaf tips are very sharp.
Maximum size:
Eventually around 350–450 cm tall and up to approximately 300 cm wide in favourable conditions, usually much smaller for many years in UK gardens.
