Impatiens tinctoria is a tall perennial with fleshy stems and large, deeply veined green leaves. Its white flowers have graceful spurs and dark pink central markings, giving them an almost orchid-like character. Fragrance adds another reason to place it near a sheltered path or seating area. It makes a striking centrepiece for a moist, leafy border where ordinary bedding plants would feel rather small.
Growing conditions:
Grow in partial shade in fertile, humus-rich, moist but well-drained soil, sheltered from drying winds. Protect the tuberous roots with a deep winter mulch in mild gardens or overwinter frost-free in colder areas.
Maximum size:
Approximately 150–250 cm tall and 50–100 cm wide.
