Salvia concolor is a vigorous Mexican sage with leafy stems and long spikes of deep blue flowers. The blooms are held in dark calyces, which sharpen their colour and add depth to the display. Its tall habit makes it particularly useful behind lower perennials or among other exuberant foliage plants. Give it warmth and space, and it can provide a memorable late-season flourish.
Growing conditions:
Grow in a warm, sheltered position in sun or light shade with fertile, well-drained soil and regular summer moisture. Protect from frost, overwintering under cover or keeping backup cuttings in colder gardens.
Maximum size:
True Salvia concolor can exceed 250 cm tall in favourable conditions; allow approximately 100–150 cm of space, although UK seasonal growth may be smaller.
