The giant chain fern produces long, finely divided green fronds that rise and arch from the crown. Its substantial size makes it a beautiful anchor for woodland-style or tropical-inspired planting. The fronds bring movement and texture while providing a calm green backdrop for more colourful companions. In favourable sheltered conditions it remains evergreen, giving the garden structure beyond summer.
Growing conditions:
Grow in partial shade in moist, humus-rich, neutral to acidic soil. Shelter from cold, drying winds and protect the crown with a dry winter mulch in frost-prone gardens.
Maximum size:
Approximately 100–150 cm tall and 50–100 cm wide, with arching fronds extending beyond the crown.
