Aralia elata develops a dramatic framework of stout, often spiny stems topped with very large, divided leaves. The foliage gives it an exotic appearance while retaining the seasonal rhythm of a deciduous tree. Billowing clusters of tiny cream flowers add another layer of interest in summer. It makes a compelling backdrop for ferns and shade-loving plants, provided there is room for its mature canopy and suckers.

Growing conditions:
Grow in a sheltered position in partial shade with fertile, moist but well-drained soil. Allow ample space and remove unwanted suckers if you need to contain its spread.

Maximum size:
An unpruned mature tree can reach approximately 800–1,200 cm tall and over 800 cm wide, although younger plants remain much smaller.
