Canna altensteinii rises on strong stems carrying broad, paddle-shaped green leaves. Orange to orange-red flowers add warmth above the foliage in summer, although the leaves alone are reason enough to grow it. Use it behind lower planting to create a lush, layered backdrop, or give it a substantial container of its own. This is a plant for anyone who likes their summer garden generous.

Growing conditions:
Provide full sun, shelter, rich soil and regular watering and feeding during growth. Protect the rhizomes from frost by lifting and storing them under cover, or use a deep winter mulch in reliably mild gardens.

Maximum size:
Usually approximately 200–300 cm tall and 50–100 cm wide, with size strongly influenced by warmth and feeding.
