Verbena bonariensis sends slender, branching stems above a low base of leaves. Small purple flower clusters appear from summer into autumn and are attractive to pollinating insects. Its open structure lets you see through to other plants, making it useful even towards the front of a spacious border. Plant it in loose groups for a natural, floating effect among grasses and other perennials.
Growing conditions:
Grow in full sun in moderately fertile, well-drained soil. Protect the crown with a dry winter mulch in colder gardens and remove unwanted seedlings if it begins to spread too freely.
Maximum size:
Approximately 150–250 cm tall and 30–50 cm wide per plant.
