This unusual Chinese lantern is grown for its bright orange fruiting calyces, which can take on elongated, chilli-like shapes. Green summer foliage develops warmer tones as autumn approaches. The richly coloured stems bring character to an informal border and can be used in dried arrangements. It spreads vigorously underground, so a contained position is a sensible way to enjoy the show.

Growing conditions:
Grow in sun or partial shade in well-drained soil. Use a large container or a carefully managed planting area to keep its spreading rhizomes within bounds.

Maximum size:
Approximately 50–100 cm tall and 50–100 cm wide initially, spreading considerably further if unrestricted.
