Giant scabious sends tall, branching stems above a clump of deeply divided green foliage, topped with pale yellow pincushion flowers in summer. Its airy silhouette brings height to a planting scheme without looking heavy, making it a lovely choice for relaxed cottage gardens and generous mixed borders. Pair it with ornamental grasses or purple flowers for a combination that feels soft, informal and full of life. Give this returning perennial room to stretch and it will bring a welcome touch of theatre to the back of your border.
Growing conditions:
Grow in full sun or partial shade in fertile, moist but well-drained soil. Allow space for the clump to develop, and provide support if planting in an exposed position.
Maximum size:
Approximately 150–250 cm tall and 50–100 cm wide at maturity, usually within 2–5 years.
