Symphyotrichum novae-angliae ‘Betel Nut’ is a tall New England aster with richly coloured purple-pink daisies. Flowers appear from late September, making it especially useful for extending the garden’s season. Its upright stems fit well behind lower perennials and among autumn grasses. Raised at Great Dixter, it is a characterful choice for a generous, informal border.
Growing conditions:
Grow in full sun in fertile, moist but well-drained soil. Water during dry periods and provide support if needed before the tall stems become heavy with flowers.
Maximum size:
Approximately 180 cm tall; allow around 60–90 cm of space for the clump, dividing when it becomes congested.
