Hedychium coccineum ‘Hungphung Stripe’ has long leaves marked by a pale stripe along the central vein. The leaves sit in striking ranks up the stems, giving the plant an unusually ordered, almost ladder-like appearance. Orange flowers with salmon-pink stamens add a late-season flourish when conditions are warm enough. It is an excellent choice when you want your foliage collection to include something a little less familiar.
Growing conditions:
Provide a sheltered position in sun or partial shade with humus-rich, moist but well-drained soil. Mulch the rhizomes deeply in mild areas, or overwinter a potted plant frost-free in colder gardens.
Maximum size:
Around 200 cm tall, potentially 150–250 cm, with an initial spread of up to 50 cm that increases as the rhizomes establish.
