Begonia evansii, also known as Begonia grandis subsp. evansiana, forms clumps of asymmetric green leaves, often with reddish colouring beneath. Nodding pink flowers on slender stems brighten the planting in summer and into autumn. It is particularly lovely with ferns, where the broad leaves contrast with finely divided fronds. This is an inviting choice for bringing detail and softness to a sheltered shady corner.
Growing conditions:
Grow in partial shade in humus-rich soil that stays moist in summer but drains well in winter. Mulch the dormant crown for winter and be patient in spring, as new growth can emerge late.
Maximum size:
Approximately 40–50 cm tall and wide, with nearby seedlings or bulbils gradually extending the planting.
