Leonotis nepetifolia is a fast-growing annual with upright stems and broad, toothed green leaves. Tubular orange flowers emerge in rounded whorls at intervals up the stems, giving it a distinctive tiered silhouette. Its height and unusual flower arrangement make it a talking point among more familiar border plants. Start it early and give it warmth for the best chance of a full display before autumn frosts.
Growing conditions:
Grow as a tender annual in full sun, planting out after frost into fertile, well-drained soil. Water during dry spells and choose a warm, sheltered position to support its tall growth and flowering.
Maximum size:
Usually approximately 100–200 cm tall, potentially 300 cm in ideal conditions; allow around 60–90 cm of planting space.
