Phytolacca americana forms tall, branching stems with broad green leaves that can develop purple tones in autumn. Small pale flowers are followed by hanging clusters of glossy, dark crimson-black berries. Its generous scale gives it real presence at the back of an informal border. All parts are toxic if eaten, and the berries should be kept away from children and pets.
Growing conditions:
Grow in sun or partial shade in fertile, moist but well-drained soil. Remove unwanted seedlings and consider removing fruiting stems before seeds spread beyond the intended planting.
Maximum size:
Approximately 250–400 cm tall and 100–150 cm wide in favourable conditions.
