Dasylirion wheeleri forms a dense, rounded crown of long, narrow leaves with toothed edges. Its silvery colour and radiating outline make it a dramatic contrast to softer grasses and broad-leaved plants. Over many years it can develop a trunk, gradually lifting the crown above the ground. Tall flower spikes are an occasional bonus on mature specimens.
Growing conditions:
Grow in full sun in exceptionally well-drained soil or a gritty container mix. Protect the crown from winter wet and shelter young plants from hard frost, keeping the sharp leaf edges away from paths.
Maximum size:
Typically around 150 cm tall and wide, with very old plants developing a trunk; flowering stems can rise to approximately 400–500 cm.
