Hedychium densiflorum ‘Assam Orange’ forms a leafy clump with long, glossy green leaves arranged along upright stems. Dense spikes of deep orange flowers bring a welcome flash of colour towards the end of summer. Its relatively manageable size makes it easy to combine with ferns, cannas and other foliage plants. Use it where the flowers can emerge through surrounding greenery like little glowing torches.
Growing conditions:
Choose sun or partial shade, shelter and humus-rich soil that stays moist in summer but drains well in winter. Mulch the crown deeply for winter, or overwinter a container-grown plant frost-free in colder areas.
Maximum size:
Usually around 100 cm tall and 50–100 cm wide; vigorous plants in favourable conditions can grow taller.
