Eriobotrya japonica develops a bold canopy of long, glossy leaves with softly felted undersides. The strongly textured foliage gives it an exotic character throughout the year. Scented pale flowers can appear on mature plants, followed by orange-yellow fruit where conditions allow. In most UK gardens fruit is unreliable, so choose it primarily for its handsome foliage and structure.

Growing conditions:
Grow in full sun in a sheltered position with fertile, well-drained soil. Protect young plants from severe frost and cold winds while they establish.

Maximum size:
Eventually approximately 400–800 cm tall and wide over many years, although pruning can maintain a smaller specimen.
