Hibiscus coccineus produces tall stems carrying deeply divided green leaves. Large, star-shaped scarlet flowers appear in late summer and early autumn, creating a wonderfully bold contrast with the foliage. It is a natural candidate for a sunny bog-garden edge or another planting area with dependable moisture. A warm summer helps it flower well in the UK, so give it the sunniest sheltered position you can.
Growing conditions:
Grow in full sun in fertile soil that stays consistently moist, including suitable bog-garden conditions. Mulch the dormant crown for winter and allow time for new shoots to appear late in spring.
Maximum size:
Approximately 180–240 cm tall and 60–100 cm wide in favourable conditions.
