Ricinus communis ‘Zanzibariensis’ is a fast-growing foliage plant with impressively large, hand-shaped green leaves. Its tall stems build height quickly, making it useful for filling the back of a seasonal exotic border. Flower clusters and colourful seed capsules can add interest towards the end of the season. All parts, especially the seeds, are highly toxic if eaten, so choose its position carefully around children and pets.

Growing conditions:
Treat as a tender annual in the UK, planting out after frost into fertile, moist but well-drained soil in full sun. Provide shelter, regular water and feeding for the largest leaves.

Maximum size:
Usually approximately 200–300 cm tall in one UK growing season, with a spread of around 100 cm or more in favourable conditions.
